First wine tasting

November 28th, 2002 | by Brian |

Last week I went to my first wine tasting. Rieslings. I don’t have much of a taste memory, or a “mind’s nose”. In my head, I can imagine sites and sounds, and “replay” them in my head, but not smells and tastes. Why? I don’t know. But it sure makes comparing wines difficult. At this stage I can compare the dryness, and perhaps what’s called the “finish”, i.e., how long the wine tastes. Other aspects I can only descrive metaphorically. For example, the “spectrum” of flavors. Perhaps with experience I can taste wines in a context, and when I sense will then have meaning. If I were at this stage with music, say, The Beatles, particularly, I would not be able to distinguish betwene early, middle, and late Beatles, and between a John or Paul song. So, I’ve room to grow.
