Property rights to ponder

July 9th, 2004 | by Brian |

I was listening to the radio last night, which is quite rare, and the DJ on the local “World Class Rock” station mentioned that The Who has recently licensed some of their songs for use in commercials. This is clearly an intellectual property issue that I’m still not quite resolved on.

Peter Bagge writes and illustrates cartoons for Reason magazine, and his latest is a great critique modern art, snobbery, and government funding of (some kinds of) “art.” It got me thinking: Are Shakespeare’s comedies really any better or sophisticated than, say, Frasier? Why is something considered “cultured”, as opposed to part of “popular culture”, and hence not very esteemed?
